Yoga Poses to Connect You to the Fire Element

English

As we follow the ancient teaching of the science of Ayurveda, the five elements are what make up the world around us and these elements reside within us. We learn to understand and connect to earth, water, fire, air and space – reminding us of our connection to ourselves and nature.

As Melissa Eisler, from the Chopra Center suggests that one way of connecting to and enhance our understanding is to incorporate them into our yoga practice. Yoga is a great way to strengthen your connection with your body and mind and create balance within. Each of the elements offers various and different benefits.
The fire element is associated with our third chakra, Manipura, which is located deep within our abdomen. This element and chakra are associated with heat, power, strength, passion, transformation, and digestion. When our fire is not in balance, depression might set in, we lack motivation, we become distant or withdrawn (low fire) or irritable, angry, and aggressive (high fire). An imbalance of fire can also cause inflammation or indigestion. Eisler recommends a series of asanas to balance our fire and stay in balance.
Here are some of the asanas that could helps us balance our fire element and strengthen our third chakra.

Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)

Up to 25 poses are linked together to form a Surya Namaskar. This depends of course which Surya we choose to practice. This sequence is a great way to tap into our internal fire and warm up our muscles for our practice.

Plank Pose (Phalakasana)

Plank is a great foundation pose that will help you move into other, more complex poses. This pose helps to strengthen your arms and abdomen, and improves your posture and stability over time.

Tiger Pose (Vyaghrasana)

Tiger pose, sometimes also referred to as “knee-to-nose” pose, it is another great way to strengthen your core. It generates heat from within as you move through the sequence.

Revolved Lunge Pose (Parivrtta Anjaneyasana)

Adding a twist to the traditional lunge pose helps target your abdomen and improve digestion.

Chair Pose (Utkatasana)

This pose not only works your legs and arms, but also stimulates your abdominal muscles. After just a few breaths, you can start to feel the heat rising from within.

Boat Pose (Navasana)

This pose is a great way to build heat in your core as well as strengthen your abdominal muscles and hip flexors.

Half Lord of the Fishes Poses (Ardha Matsyendrasana)

Twists are always great to include in classic fire yoga sequences, as they gently massage organs within your core cavity, which aids digestion.

As we incorporate the mentioned poses into our yoga practice to balance our fire element, we might considre increasing the lengh of time holding. We also might consider breathing properly through each pose and movement to maintain or increase our internal heat. With each practice, we are stoking our internal fire and strenghtening our third Chakra Mainipura.
